That's Embarrassing....and a Can of Worms?

I'm going to post some bathroom pictures. Before the work started and after one day.

The before pictures are terrible but that's why we're doing this. The house was built in 1975, almost forty years ago.

I only shower twice a week. Wanda and I sleep together and she insists I clean-up Wednesday and Sunday. She showers every day. Our bathroom has provided over well over 21,000 showers. I understand why it's worn out.

Over the years the bathroom has taken a back seat to more important things.

Wanda and I climbed to the top of Blarney Castle where she kissed the stone. We have sailed to Hawaii, Mexico and Alaska. We spent Christmas at Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration. We've had good times with good friends in Nevada City, California. We could have remodeled the entire house but then we wouldn't have the memories we treasure.

We have talked about our choices and don't regret a thing. But this time it was a trip to Norway or the bathroom and Norway will just have to wait a few years.

It's impossible to concentrate with workers in the house. I'm convinced their energy was here all night. Neither of us slept well and this morning poor Wanda had to wash her hair in the sink and apply her make-up in a bad mirror. Last night after dinner we drove over to Older Daughter Jennifer and Husband Eric's house so she could shower. Me, like I said, I'm not due until tomorrow.

So the work started yesterday around 9 a.m. They usually start at 8 but this first day they hauled in enough tools to fill a small warehouse. The day was spent ripping and sawing and gutting the room. Today they hope to get the new tub and shower installed.

We were thinking about doing a tiled walk-in shower but decided a tub was a necessity when it comes time to sell this place. Young families are moving in this neighborhood. I'm sure they will have little ones to float. Besides we didn't want to spend more then this market will eventually return.

The old tub wasn't draining because the pipe under it was gone, corroded, eaten away by time. You can see a square of dirt in the after pictures. That's where the water was seeping. We had two plumbers here for two hours yesterday. It's all fixed now.

There is a door between our bedroom and the bathroom. We never use it so they're removing it and putting a solid wall in its place. It's a good thing we decided to do this. When they removed the trim around the old door guess what they found...termites. We opened a can of termites.

A few years ago the living room walls were treated for dry wood termites, these are different. These are subterranean termites; they come up through cracks in the slab floor looking for moisture and wood. Since our first problem the house has been treated every three months for regular pests. But termites are special. This Thursday Antimite will spend the day here drilling holes and killing bugs.

Did I say every day we were on this project the price went up $500, I think I did. Well, I was wrong, it's more.

Chuck, did you know the pipe was leaking the water? We had this happen twice in our house. The pipe under the shower came apart (some bad glue they used at that time with a lawsuit but we were too late). We smelled a funkly smell and went out and looked with a flashlight though the vent and there was a lake under there. That cost pretty penny to fix. We also redid the shower at the same time to something much better 3yrs ago

We also had subterrianium termites many years ago .Had to have the whole underside of the house flooded with chemicals and holes drilled in our slab livingroom floor. It was very expensive. I think $3000 at that time. I am sure it has gone up since then.
