A Quick Word Or Two.....

As you may remember from past blog entries Yesterday I had a morning date with the long tube up the colon.

I digress.

At midnight Monday I ate a bowl of Kellogg Frosted Mini Wheats with sliced banana and strawberries. That was the last time food entered my usually ravenous stomach until noon yesterday (Wednesday). On the way home from the procedure.....by the way, do you know what the difference between an operation and a procedure is?.....About two thousand dollars. So, on the way home from the procedure I asked Wanda to stop at Starbucks.

I had not eaten in thirty six hours and all I wanted was a latte. Going without food was not a problem. Drinking over a liter of the laxative solution was not a problem. Having to get naked and wear a hospital gown that exposed my backside was not a problem, vein poking, ditto, long tube up the butt, also no problem. But going with out caffeine, that was a big problem. On and off, mostly on, from Tuesday morning until I got that latte I had one hellacious headache.

The preparation is worse than the procedure.

Tuesday evening I drank around a liter and a half of the mixture. I started drinking at six and finished around eight. I was "busy" from nine until eleven or so. I didn't sleep very well.

Wanda drove me to the hospital Wednesday morning. I had the colonoscopy at nine. We were on the way home at 11:30. The entire experience wasn't difficult and a lot easier than colon cancer, I'm sure.

Wanda is off today and later we have tickets for "Singin In The Rain." The musical is celebrating it's 60th anniversary with special one day only (today) showings. It will be fun seeing it on the big screen for the first time.

I'll be back Monday, thanks for reading the blog.

Just a couple things to add. If you think you should have a colonoscopy and are afraid, embarrassed, or just plain don't want one. Please, rethink it. You can eat jello, broth, and Popsicles the day before. I thought it would be easier to stick with water and tea. The bowel prep isn't hard. I mixed the powder as directed and poured it into four 500 ml. empty water bottles. It was easy to think about drinking it that way, a half bottle every ten to twenty minutes.

As for the actual procedure, what little I remember of it was easy. I had air blown into the colon and I had to "get rid" of it before I could go home. In the recovery room I sounded like a farting machine gun, and the best part of everything, I didn't care.

"See" you Monday.
