I know a number of people who won't fly. Some are claustrophobic, some are afraid the plane will crash. Others don't want to subject themselves to a confined space for hours.
What bothers me most is all the pre and post flight craziness. Getting to the airport two hours before a flight is torture. Not stretch him on the rack torture, but close. Going through security with stocking feet, all my most cherished possessions out of reach and out of sight bothers me. Sitting on uncomfortable hard plastic chairs is more torture. Then comes standing on line for the boarding process.
Once on the airplane I always seem to sit next to someone who has a head cold and wants the armrest. After changing airplanes and discovering new airports at least once, I get to my final destination. Now I must walk a few miles to an exit, or worse, baggage claim. Once there I wait with a few hundred others, all who want their luggage first.
I heard this was, or could be, the safest year on record for flying. If there are no accidents over the last two days, 2011 will record 1 death in 7.4 million passengers. The previous "record" is 1 in 6.1 million passengers.
Those are really good odds. However, when is the last time you heard one person was killed in an airplane? If only one person were to die on my flight I would take my chances. For now I'll stick to the train.
Happy Birthday To You.....Happy Birthday To You,
A McDonald's plain cheeseburger turned one year old today.
A nutritionist bought the cheeseburger without ketchup or mustard Dec. 29, 2010. She left the unwrapped burger unrefrigerated on her counter for the past year and said not much has changed, apart from the bun turning stale. She said it "still smells slightly like a burger, and there has been no sign of mold, maggots or bacteria. It makes me wonder why we choose to eat food like this when even bacteria won't eat it.".................
and it makes me wonder why someone would a) think to do this and b) leave it out on the counter. Jeez, at least put it in a cupboard. She did say the burger had "become a conversation piece." So, people came over to visit the burger? Hi there, just stopped by to see how the burger was doing?
Twinkies and burgers, the all American meal.
The year is winding down, only today, tomorrow and Saturday. Robert Osborn of Turner Classic Movies said, "Where did the year go?" I'm thinking not only the year but the last ten years. I need to hear the time isn't rushing by from a young person. When we were young did the older folks feel like I do now? If they did I wish one of them had told me.
Would I have done anything different? I don't know. I may have, but I doubt it.
The expression is "youth is wasted on the young."
Watched the movie "Auntie Mame" the other day. I initially saw it at the theater with my family. I was nine or ten at the time and I remember thinking how much I wanted an aunt like her. What I should have been thinking about was Mame's philosophy on life, which was,
"Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death, so live, live, live"
