When Grandson Nick worked for his dad at Big O Tires, Wanda often took goodies to the shop. Nick left a month ago and she hadn't been there since. She didn't want the guys to feel abandoned so she baked and delivered cookies last Saturday. Like the family dog, I went along for the ride.
It was 70 degrees, sunny and a beautiful day. I waited in the car while Wanda passed around her cookies.
When is the last time you looked up and watched the clouds float by? I did it Saturday and was quickly transported to a summer day many years ago. I see a turtle, a bird and a guy that looks like Uncle Harold. The next time you're out take some time and enjoy the free show. It is very, very relaxing.
Not only did my cloud gazing take me back to my youth I became aware of many things I no longer see. Unless I'm in an unfamiliar area I don't seem to see beyond my immediate field of vision. While I realize driving with your head in the clouds is not a good idea I limit myself even as a passenger.
I'm a ten minute drive to water, a three hour drive to snow. I live at the foot of 3,848 ft. Mt. Diablo. I haven't been up to the summit in thirty years. I don't know the last time I looked at its peak.
There are many beautiful things to see in life. I understand why I wore blinders in my busy days but now that I have time to take in my surroundings, it's a shame I don't do it more often.
Just what every prom date wants, a chicken corsage. In a limited run of 100 KFC is selling these for $20. You can order on line. The corsage comes with a $5 KFC gift certificate so you can pick out the chicken of your choice and it'll be fresh. I have one thing to say about this, what's the finger licking point?
Today is also National Pecan Day and in honor of that I'll give you a quote from a very popular 1989 movie.
Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash but I would be proud to partake in a piece of your pecan pie.
Look up the film, think of this as homework.
Now, on to the news of the past week-end.
A Chicago man who claimed he was “tax exempt” and didn't have to pay the 22-cent sales tax on his $1.79 two-liter of Pepsi allegedly pulled a .22 caliber sub machine gun to avoid forking over the extra cash at a convenience store.
Nahshon Shelton was charged with five counts, including felony unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault.
After he was arrested, Shelton allegedly told police, “[This] is my neighborhood, I’m tax exempt! Man, you know what, I’ll keep it real. I had to put them in their place.”
According to Assistant State Attorney Claire Savaglio, the entire incident was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras.
They have an open bar. I suggest you stay away from the water.
The Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Center, a facility that processes raw sewage, has recently started billing itself as a wedding venue.
"The natural area that is around it is beautiful, we can have outside weddings as well," said Susan Tallarico, the director of Brightwater Environmental Education & Community Center.
An eight-hour rental of the indoor section of the center costs $2,000 and the money is used to fund environmental education programs.
"Need a place to party? With a full catering kitchen, state-of-the-art AV equipment, dance floor, ample parking, beautiful outdoor grounds, and room for up to 260 people, Brightwater Center has everything you need for your wedding reception or special event."
Other venues in the area range from $5,000 to $10,000 in price.
"I think a lot of people will have a hard time getting past what really happens there. You're having food and beverage, it somehow doesn't feel right," said wedding planner Jacky Grotle. "I don’t think I could recommend it ever to my clients.”
The wedding reception was for shit but the honeymoon was wonderful.
He thought having a computer would make his life easier.
A New Hampshire man was arrested on burglary charges after police were able to track him down for stealing a laptop when he called technical support for help to unlock the device.
The computer’s rightful owner, Mike Witonis, received an email from Apple thanking him for calling customer service about the laptop even though he hadn’t had it for a year.
Casey Wentworth, 24, was arrested at his home after police were able to use the computer’s serial number, which he had provided during the tech support call, to locate him.
Wentworth is accused of taking the laptop from Witonis's home in Dover in February 2013.
Administrators at Evangel Christian Academy School gave a life science teacher a six-day paid suspension after she reportedly called a student a “sassy slut.”
The parents of the girl claim she is “well-mannered and polite. She may very well be a slut but she is not sassy."
"I'm just still numb about what happened and the disciplinary action that the school had taken," the girl’s mother, Mary Mallard said. I don't think it was fair at all they initially told me that she would receive one day suspension with pay and when I made it back to my job, I received a call from the principal that stated that the situation was serious and they wanted me to know that they would give her five additional days.”......I wonder what they give for really serious infractions.
Mallard doesn’t want to see the teacher fired, but she is still waiting for an apology.
"A paid administrative leave, I guess you would think it's a vacation but it's not. I want to tell you any teacher or school employee that I've ever dealt with, who has been put out on paid administrative leave is very upset about it, they are very upset about the fact that they have been accused of something," said Jackie LeBarron the president of the Red River Teacher's United Federation.
School principal Bud Fallson declined to comment on the matter.
The teacher is currently unavailable for comment but will make a statement when she returns from Aspen.
