I Learned a New Word Today...

Let me entertain you....let me make you smile....I'll show you some new tricks....I'll show you some old tricks....I'm very versatile.

I'm paraphrasing from the movie "Gypsy". Gypsy was a stripper; I'm just going to write about several different things today. So, I thought of versatile, it's a good word.

Versatile

1 : changing or fluctuating readily: variable
2 : embracing a variety of subjects, fields, or skills
3 : small usually shiny 3" white squares covered with prose

Stripper is a good word too, so is striper. The on-line dictionary I use has the definition of striper as striped bass, first used in 1937.

Some good words rhyme with striper; diaper, viper, hyper, sniper, griper and wiper.

I heard a brand new word this morning and it's not in the dictionary. The word is Affluenza and a lawyer used it to describe a 16-year-old kid in Texas. "The boy suffered from 'Affluenza'", said the lawyer.

I'm referring to the young boy in Texas who killed four people while driving drunk and got probation.

AFFLUENZA

1 : growing up rich and spoiled
2 : not expecting or understanding the consequence of action

Obviously a 16-year-old should not be drinking and most certainly not drinking and driving. This kid's blood alcohol was three times the legal adult limit when he plowed his daddy's truck into four pedestrians.

Authorities said he and his friends were seen on video stealing two cases of beer from a store. There were seven youngsters in the truck when the accident happened.

The judge sentenced the boy to ten years probation. He will first go to rehab in a California center. The cost is $450,000 a year. His parents pay the bills.

His attorney, "If he received a 20-year jail sentence he could be out in two. But instead the judge fashioned a sentence that will have him under the thumb of the justice system for 10-years."

AFFLUEZA.....I hope it isn't contagious.

The other day I wrote about my summons to U.S. District Court next month. Well, I went on line and filled out my forms and politely asked to be excused. I got my reply yesterday. My service has been postponed to early May. I guess they figure if nothing else, the weather will be warmer for the two hour trip.

The court clerk was nice enough to let me know I could request a dismissal and listed the reasons and requirements; they are service on a jury in the last year, physical or mental disability, or death.

Recent jury service must include court papers. Disability must include a letter from a doctor. Death must include a signed death certificate or if one can not be obtained the body.

How about that new computer! Yesterday was my first full day with it. So far, so good, ha, ha, ha, ha and ha.

I'm thinking the best thing to do with the new one is basically start from scratch, as if it's our first computer. I set it up Tuesday evening. So far I've downloaded 62 updates and a new operating system. It came with Windows 8 and last night I read about Windows 8.1. Since Wanda and I are learning how to use it, and it's only been a day, and there are some changes with 8.1, why not upgrade?

When I pulled up the blog this morning my dashboard was nowhere to be found. I can not write the daily entry without it. It was there before I did the 8.1 upgrade. So this morning I'm writing this on the old lap top. That's what I mean by starting from scratch with the new one. Maybe it will be easier than trying to continue using all our old programs on this computer. What the Hell, the new one has a beautiful 20" screen. It'll be nice for watching video, viewing pictures, Facebook, games and Skype.

"I love train travel"
This is one more example of our tax dollars at work.

Phyllis August of Redmond, Washington said she and her husband were preparing to fly from St. Louis to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport when one of her bags was pulled aside by a TSA agent.

August, who has a business selling sock monkey dolls, said the agent took issue with a small replica pistol belonging to "Rooster Monkburn," a cowboy-themed sock monkey named in tribute to the character from "True Grit."

"She said 'this is a gun'" August said. "I said no, it's not a gun it's a prop for my sock monkey."

"She said 'If I held it up to your neck, you wouldn't know if it was real or not,' and I said 'really?'" August said.

August was eventually allowed to board the plane with the rest of the items in her bag, mostly sewing supplies. Rooster Monkburn was allowed to board unarmed.

The TSA issued this statement.

"TSA officers are dedicated to keeping the nation's transportation systems safe and secure for the traveling public. Under longstanding aircraft security policy, and out of an abundance of caution, realistic replicas of firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags."

Sock Monkey Monkburn's pistol was 2 inches long.

This is worth fighting about....maybe they had a little too much coffee.

Police have charged an Arizona couple with assault and disorderly conduct after they called 911 and threw food at McDonald's employees because their breakfast order was missing hash browns.

Husband and wife Mike and Nova Hill claim they had no choice but to call 911 after managers were not helping them when their No. 2 and No. 4 orders from McDonald's were served without potatoes on the side.

"It's a meal," said Nova. "Just like you should get fries with your hamburger, we should have got hash browns with our breakfast sandwiches."

Nova says managers refused to give back her money after she confronted them, prompting her to throw food in their direction. She did say that was out of frustration and fighting over $2 of hash browns is ridiculous. "It's ridiculous to fight that hard just to get customer service," said Nova.

Mike then dialed 911 and went behind the counter to argue with the manager.

"I was barely able to hold myself back," said Mike. "And if not for the 911 operator calling me back, I probably would have went berserk on him."

Good use of the 911 system and better use of the word went.

As always, thanks for participating in the blog.
