Ignorance Is Bliss.....

Several months ago Wanda and I upgraded our cell phones. Prior to the change Wanda was using a flip phone and I had a slide. They were different brands and different styles but they did have something in common. They were both old and a pain to use.

We have been using Tracfones for several years and are happy with the service. The new phones are LG840's with touch screens and lots of options. They are NOT smart phones but do have a few dozen built in apps. They have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G capabilities. For $20 we get three months of service and 180 minutes of use. A text is one third of a minute. We can add extra minutes if needed.

We were talking about upgrading the other day. I think we both feel we're missing something but are hesitant to spend the extra money. This morning I received an Email from Xfinity extolling the benefits and savings of its new 'get connected' program. I thought it an omen and decided to check it out.

Last night I watched "Through the Wormhole" on the Science Channel. Wikipedia: Through the Wormhole is an American science documentary television series narrated and hosted by American actor Morgan Freeman. It began airing on Science in the United States on 9 June 2010.

Now I could listen to Morgan Freeman narrate an hour series on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This science thing was really interesting, interesting and way over my head. The episode, "Can the Human Brain be Hacked?" explored the potential, and dangers, of hacking the mind.

Like I said, it was way over my head. Very, very smart people are mapping neural pathways of the brain, designing brain implants and measuring brain waves to hopefully design a system that will enable communication and movement for people with forms of paralysis. The field is called Neuroscience.

Wikipedia: Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system. Traditionally it's been seen as a branch of biology. However, it is currently an interdisciplinary science that collaborates with other fields such as chemistry, computer science, engineering, linguistics, mathematics, medicine and allied disciplines, philosophy, physics, and psychology. It also exerts influence on other fields such as neuroeducation and neurolaw.

The next hour was "Futurescape" and I listened to James Woods talk about why robots will eventually get to vote.

Brain implants are the future, maybe robots too. Perhaps one day humans will have avatars going to work for them. I saw that in a movie.

All this science of the future gives me hope. The people of tomorrow should be very smart. They will have so much technology to learn from and use. I can't imagine what it will be like.

I decided against new smart phones. I couldn't navigate the web site to place an order; I doubt I could navigate the phone.

With all my future science talk this should bring you back to reality.

Today the folks behind the esteemed Oxford English Dictionary named a new word of the year for 2013. It beat out Twerking which, as you probably know, is a rapid up and down movement of the rear end, caboose, behind, hiney, or just plain ass. It also beat Bitcoin which is a digital currency that's making a ton of real money for investors.

The new word of the year for 2013 (drum roll please) is SELFI

How appropriate. With all the glamour and all the glitz, all the smart phones with all the cameras what better to represent this year. SELFI: The act of taking a picture of oneself. Who loves ya baby? I love me, that's who.

One small group of people understands the article The Role of the Trigeminal Sensory Nuclear Complex in the Pathophysiology of Craniocervical Dystonia. One large group of people are taking pictures of themselves.

Like I said, ignorance is bliss.

On one hand I wish I could stick around and see the future, on the other hand I don't.

Today is "Name Your P.C. Day." I shall call mine George Duncan Hempstead

I'm Alabama Bound.....there may be some hebbie-jeebies hangin' round.

A Florida woman says both her mother and grandmother were hoarders. She was just surprised to find her grandmother's remains in a storage rental unit.

Rebecca Franch says just before her mother Bobbie died she told her that her grandmother never made it to her birth place in Alabama.

Mom said she was too broke at the time to transport my grandmother's remains. She planned on doing it later and never intended to have her in storage for sixteen years.

The coffin was discovered when the contents of the unpaid storage space were put up for auction.

Also in Alabama.

A 79-year-old man lost his fight to keep his wife buried in the front yard of the house they shared for decades.

The remains of Patsy Davidson, who died in 2009, were removed from the unusual grave site last week. Jimmy Davidson said his wife's last wishes were to stay around the old homestead. He had vowed he would never remove her from their "piece of America."

The problem was water runoff from the grave site. It could potentially seep into near by wells.

"See there Billy, I told you that water had a metallic taste."
