Still Waiting and Other Things.....

Yep, Still waiting to get an OK on the medication. I called this morning and was told. "Your adjuster is conferencing with the doctor (theirs not mine) and should, I hope, get back to us later today. I'm sorry for the delay." Nice of Brian to tell me he was sorry for the delay. Too bad he's just a go-between. OK, enough of that situation for now.

The sliding door to the patio is sliding no more.

Inside, with a bowl of food in my hand, a pacing and pawing cat outside, and a door that only opened two inches, I knew we had a problem. I'm getting really tired of blowing off issues by saying, "It's to be expected or that's what happens when you own a home." The problem was the metal track the door rolls on, it was unraveling and coming apart. I thought Wanda and I could fix it, easy peasy. All we needed to do was lift out the patio door, remove and replace the track, and reinstall the door.

I suggested this to Wanda who said, "No, call East Country Glass, they installed the doors and windows. We are not going to do this ourselves." Once again, Wanda was right. The price quote for the repair was $151. The guys were here for about an hour. They replaced the track and both roller mechanisms. We couldn't have done this repair, no way, no how. Sometimes you just have to say, "Oh well, that's to be expected when you own a home" and leave it to the professionals.

She's very happy about her pregnancy, the story reads. She is 21-years-old and this is her second. She rose to fame on MTV's 16 and pregnant. God, I'm getting old. I didn't think a pregnancy for a kid barely old enough to drive was reason for celebration.

Wanda and I watch the morning news and sports on the FOX local affiliate. Because of this we are bombarded with "American Idol" promotions. One of them highlighted a young man who had a prosthetic leg. I can't imagine how difficult this must be. He sings and plays the guitar. I have admiration for his musical ability. I just question the necessity of wearing shorts at his audition. Just saying is all.

Allergic to peanuts or lactose intolerant? Do you need a gluten free diet? The government says food allergies may be a disability under the law. A college student in Massachusetts who claimed he paid for a meal plan but couldn't eat brought his problem to the government. I'm giving odds, the 49ers win the Super Bowl and the student was in a law program.

The University reached an agreement with the student. It will not only provide gluten free options in it's dining hall but allow students to pre-order meals. It will provide a dedicated space for storage and preparation to avoid contamination. It will train staff about food allergies and pay a $50,000 cash settlement to affected students.

Eve Hill of the Justice Department's civil rights department says. "We are not saying what the general meal plan has to serve. We are saying that when a college has a mandatory meal plan they have to be prepared to make reasonable modifications to that meal plan to accommodate students with disabilities."

The agreement says that food allergies may constitute a disability under the Americans With Disabilities Act, if they are severe enough. "By preventing people from eating, they are really preventing them from accessing their educational program," Hill says of the school and its students.....Really?

I get cranky when I have to fast overnight for lab work.

Regular readers know how careful Wanda and I are about register receipts. We always check them before we leave the store, except yesterday. We had a Buy $50 and get $10 off coupon from Winco. We spent $90 which was sort of a shock since we were adding as we put goods in the cart. I bought five Fuji apples at .68 a pound. At home Wanda was looking at the receipt. When I hear, "What the Hell?" I know something is wrong.

The charge was $9.85 for five small apples. I mistakenly put one Honey Crisp $3.98 a pound in the bag. And of course that is the one the checker scanned. Who pays almost 4 bucks a pound for apples? We took them back during the first quarter of the 49ers game, we didn't miss much. The defense didn't start playing until the second half.

This ever happen to you? Something gets pushed into the back of the fridge and forgotten? A couple of weeks ago I uncovered a container of turkey from the Thanksgiving bird. It was a small amount of meat Wanda was going to put in her soup. Yes, it was pretty nasty and looked like a science experiment. There was no question it was awful. I have a small fear of spoiled food. When I was a kid I would ask my mother to "smell this please". Now I rely on dates.
Unless, like in the case of the turkey, it's obvious.

"Sell By" dates are for stock rotation for stores, if they choose to use them. "Use By" dates are the manufacturers recommendations for the best quality, if stored properly. "Expiration" dates are the suggestions for "EAT NOW" except eggs. Cartons of eggs have an expiration date but that only refers to the last date the stores should sell them. The USDA says eggs can be used 3 to 5 weeks after purchase. Hope you got all that.

I improve with age, like wine.....eggs and dairy do not.

Interesting about the college student. I think the key in this settlement was that the meal plan was mandatory not optional. I have to agree if it is a mandatory issue with no choice, the college did need to make changes to their program. I guess I am sympathetic too as I have food allergies. Luckily I can normally avoid the items I'm allergic to, but someone with severe allergies to gluten, nuts etc would have real problems. Just my thoughts. Enjoy reading your blog.
