Election Day 2012.....

A good story is worth telling twice.

It's Election Day 1980. While walking to the local polling place a neighbor yelled, "Hey, Carter just conceded." Well, I guess I know how important my vote is. Still, there were a number of issues here in California. I continued my walk.

Walking home the bad spouse asked me how I voted on gun control. I voted yes, she voted no. On capitol punishment, I voted no and she voted yes. A recycle law, I voted for, she against. Obviously, we cancelled each other out across the board. Since I voted for the recycle bill she told me if it passed I would be responsible for taking the bottles and cans back.

I told her since she voted for capitol punishment, if it passed, she would be responsible for throwing the switch. Ah, if it were only that easy.

In case you are wondering what we had in common. We were both dog people. This was before I met Wanda who introduced me to the wonderful world of cats.

Election Day 2008. From 6 AM until 9 PM I worked our polling place. I helped set things up and later took things down. In between I checked in voters and handed out ballots. It was a rewarding experience but I wouldn't do it again. I missed watching the election coverage.

"All The Way With Adlai" and "I Like Ike" are my earliest political memories. These two men, Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson, were rivals in the 1952 and the 1956 presidential elections. It wasn't enough Stevenson lost in '52. Since I was four years old the first time around it was probably the '56 election I remember as my first.

Sometime, later this morning, I'll turn on the television for unbiased political news coverage. I'll watch MSNBC to hear the democrats are winning, FOX for the republicans.

After ten months of political bombardment it's almost over. I sure hope it makes a difference. If not, they may as well flip a coin.

And use all the money spent on the election for things that really matter.
