Home......again

It's feels like I haven't been here for a week......oh, I haven't.

Wanda and I took a few days off and traveled down the beautiful California Coast by way of Amtrak. Our destination was Los Angeles, about a thirteen hour ride. We booked a sleeper compartment which gave us use of the California Parlor Car, shown above. The first class ticket also included all our meals which at Amtrak pricing almost paid for itself. The train was a very easy and comfortable way to go. I'll post more about it over the next few days.

Our scheduled time of arrival at L.A. Union Station was 9PM, we arrived on time, almost to the minute. If you are a movie fan I'm sure you have seen the station a number of times. It looks like it did when built in 1939. It was restored in 1992 and has been used as background in many a movie.

We took a cab from the station to our residence for the next four days. The driver must have been an Indy 500 or NASCAR guy practicing his skills. I was struggling to fasten my seal belt a minute into the ride. I glanced at Wanda to see her making the sign of the cross. Mapquest listed the distance as 9.2 miles from station to motel. I think we made it in ten minutes, tops.

Our reservations were at a Days Inn in Alhambra, a five minute drive from the "kids" place. The motel was situated in a business/residential area just off Main Street. A Starbucks was located about a hundred yards away. The place was neat and it was clean. Over the years I have become somewhat of a motel/hotel snob but more on that tomorrow.

On Thursday, our first full day there we were delighted to see Lynne, Marshall, and Carol our cousins from San Diego. They drove up, over 100 miles to spend a few hours and have lunch with us. Southern California people have a much different concept of time and miles driven. I still think it was incredibly far and am more appreciative than I can express.

After lunch Rebecca took us over to her place where she and Wanda hatched a plan of attack for the next few days. Rebecca and Tim are currently renting but hope to buy a place soon. In the meantime with both of them working and until recently going to school some of the daily chores were put off. Honestly, it looked like a post office exploded in their living room. Wanda promised to help Rebecca get organized and they worked on that off and on over the next three days.

I sat on the couch watching football and playing with our lap top.

Speaking of playing with the lap top. Amtrak offers free WiFi for "sleeper people." Unfortunately it was non operational on the trip down. The motel had wireless and I was able to go on line at the kids place. So, aside from most of Wednesday, I was able to connect to Blogspot.

I had mixed feelings about the blog while on the road. I wanted to post our exploits daily. Then I thought maybe a bad person will read it. Knowing we were gone they could break in the house and steal our belongings. It was a very silly thing to think since we have but a few things worth stealing. We also have the house monitored 24/7 and a house watcher/cat feeder. So I used that as an excuse to take a blog break. Tell you the truth, I missed it, and I missed all of you.

We got back into our home station stop on time, just before 1AM, Monday morning. Wanda took yesterday off and is back at work today. I always enjoy traveling but love the comfort of home and sleeping in my own bed. I imagine by tomorrow I'll be back in the groove, the visit with Rebecca and Tim a fond memory.

I plan on getting into the trip details over the next few days, hope you'll stick around. Now I'm going to go catch up on a few TV shows but first, a nap.
