A smile and a dime get you a coffee.

Not very exciting today. I think my "Nurse" traveling days are over. I called my brother last night and he seems to be doing fine. He still has several home care health workers calling on him and should for another several weeks. He also has a private "worker" coming in for a meeting. She will do some errands, a little cooking, and cleaning around the house. My biggest concern with him was getting up and down the stairs several times a day. He has been able to do that and more. He'll be OK.

This morning I discovered a smile and a dime can get you a free cup of coffee. I went up to one of our local Starbucks, we have four, population 62,000. Wanda bought me a new coffee mug and I took that along. Since I am such a great customer I now have a gold Starbucks card with my name embossed on one side. The card saves me the effort of saying my name at the order window. I can just grunt, since it's early, and hand them my card. I ordered a grande non fat vanilla latte. Oh, the gold card also gets me free flavoring so the fifty cents for the vanilla is deducted. The counter person rang up and called over my order then gave me the receipt.

About now you may be wondering about the dime? Or, you may not remember what this is about. If you bring your cup in for use you get a ten cent discount. I noticed no dime deduction, so, feeling like a cheap skate (and I said so) I inquired about it. The counter fellow looked and profusely (I know, it was only a dime I shouldn't get carried away) apologized. Then he spent the next five minutes, along with another worker, trying to figure out how to credit me the ten cents. They never did get it. Rather than just give me a dime he gave me a credit for the full amount of my drink. And, guess what? Tomorrow is my birthday and I get a free drink for that. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket?

An old friend of mine celebrated his birthday a few days ago. It was the 16Th and I missed it. I have an excuse this year, I was just a tad busy. If not for Face Book I might have missed it all together. I signed on the other day, read a message from another friend so sent a belated greeting. He then remembered mine and wrote back. Mark brought up our meeting when we both started a new school on the same day. Hampton school, in Detroit, fifty years ago next month. A lot has changed since we were kids among them the way we all now communicate.

If not for Face Book, E-Mail, Cell Phones, Twitter and the like, would we all still talk? A year ago Wanda and I were at Disneyland and I was shocked at the number of people walking around with their attention on their phones. As soon as they walked out of, or off of an attraction, out came the phone. All of the beauty and decor at the park didn't seem important. I'm sure future generations will have longer more narrow but certainly stronger thumbs.

Do you ever call a sandwich a samich? We do, it's a lot easier. Last night we had another, "she said" "he heard" episode. She said, "funny to see how much is in there." He heard, "funny samich in there." I cleaned the rest of the Dungeness Crab for a "Giant Salad" for tonight's dinner. While I was in Michigan I lost another five or six pounds. I had been working on weight loss since last June. I'm now down twenty eight pounds and plan to drop a little more, and, keep it off.

If you happen to read this before midnight eastern time check out Turner Classic Movies and "The Thin Man" a real winner from 1934. William Powell and Myrna Loy in the first, and best, film of the series.

Just a few more days until Christmas so I'm posting a picture of a small section of Downtown Rochester Hill (?) Michigan.
