KNBR is a sports talk radio station. It broadcasts, among other things, S.F. Giants baseball and S.F. 49ers Football. There are television cameras in the studio broadcasting the RADIO show on the TELEVISION. Currently I am watching a radio program. Can you think of anything more boring? Maybe tennis or golf on the radio? I have got to go turn it off.
Over the week end Wanda, Jenn, Grandson Nick, and friend and neighbor Patty went zipping through the redwoods.A good time was had by all.
The communication discussion today is based, in part, on the zip trip. Late Friday afternoon Wanda took off with the kids. They were going to have dinner and spend the night near the zip place. Saturday late morning they would do the zip, getting home between three and five. About ninety minutes after they left I looked for, and couldn't find, their itinerary. I had no idea where they were staying that evening or zipping on Saturday.
Grandson Nicholas will be sixteen in November. He has his drivers permit so I knew he was behind the wheel. I assumed Wanda was in the back seat and would be able to respond to a text, I sent one asking her to call home. Ten then fifteen minutes passed with no reply, I was getting concerned. I sent Jenn a text, also, no reply. I was getting ticked off. All I could think of was four people who had cell phones and I-Pads having a good time ignoring me.
It never crossed my mind. Maybe they are in an area that doesn't get a signal?
Over the next few hours I sent more text messages and two e mails. Still without an answer I foolishly posted on Face Book. "Will anyone up north zipping please have Wanda call home." This didn't get a reply from them either. It did get several comments from friends and family like, "Oh, where are they?" and "I wanted to go" and "That sounds like fun" and "Where are they?'......(someone different). Younger Daughter Rebecca posted something funny about lack of contact with all the phones etc.
Jennifer eventually received and opened my texts. Not knowing all the back story her response to me was, "what's so urgent?". She also commented on Daughter Rebeccas comment to my post on Face book. And she asked Wanda to call home, which she did.
Rebecca, who last week sent me some very funny things about miscommunication on Face Book, was now worried she offended Jennifer. She sent me a text asking if I thought so too. I didn't, so I sent her a return text then called Wanda at the hotel. I thought it would be prudent to talk with Jenn, just to make sure nothing anyone wrote anywhere was a problem to anyone. I had to call through the main desk at the hotel and was on hold for awhile. Finally I got through to Wanda, she was asleep, that is,until the phone woke her.
I didn't want to wake anyone else so I sent e mails to everyone just to make sure no one was offended by anything anybody wrote. Sunday morning Jennifer got my email. By this time everyone had forgotten what anyone wrote.....the texts on the phones, the comments on Face Book, and the remarks in the e mails.
About the only thing I didn't do during all of this was send a telegram which is the only thing I could have done, not so long ago.
Saturday evening I received a text from Younger Daughter Rebecca. She and a girlfriend were at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery having a picnic diner. After dinner the venue projects a movie onto one of the large mausoleum walls, it was "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" an iconic movie from 1982. I had seen an interview on TCM with the folks that operate the "dinner and a movie" so was aware of this and sent her a return text telling her so.
Sunday morning I sent Rebecca a text asking how the evening went. Sunday early afternoon I sent Rebecca a text asking how the evening went and why I hadn't heard from her. Late Sunday afternoon I sent Rebecca a text asking if everything was OK. Sunday early evening I called Rebecca and left a message. Sunday night I called Rebecca and left a message. This morning at 8 A.M. I sent Rebecca another text asking her to text or call me asap. Less than a minute later I received a text from Rebecca, it read, "what's up?"
Rebecca is thirty two years old. Jennifer is forty two years old. They are both grown up adults with husbands, friends, and lives of their own. I have got to remember, just because I have less to do and more time to do it, they do not. Then again, how hard is it to send a damn text? Since these girls both have non Jewish mothers I've got to take up the slack.
What's the matter, two hours go by and you can't call your father?
