Thursday Evening

Another day like this and I will be looking for the funny farm. I thought in spite of my absence from nursing this would be easy, "like riding a bike," I said. "The skills will come right back to me." If this is any indication of my "skills" it has been more like riding a unicycle. I can't ride a unicycle.

Before I complain much more, and since this is about Fred, for now, I will tell you a little about him. He had breakfast and lunch and we'll be eating dinner in about 45 minutes. He has been up three times. The upstairs is rather small, just two bedrooms and a bath but he can walk in a small circle. From the large bedroom through the bathroom, into the small bedroom and back. We have a deal that started at 5 this evening. If he gets out of bed and walks around this "circle" every hour, I will see to it he gets to eat, food. In a couple of days we will have him go down stairs for the day. When he does that he can be assured of eating, until then he is at my mercy.

We did have a little tiny accident this afternoon. I put a new appliance on him around eleven this morning. After lunch I went out to run some errands. He obviously fell asleep when my seal developed a leak. I am trying to understand why a single man his age needs a five hundred square foot bed and I can't. OK, so I am exaggerating a little (it's a BLOG) however he does have the largest, highest bed I have ever seen in my life. The leak was bad enough so I needed to change all the linen. Tomorrow I'm thinking a trip to the store for Super Glue.

Dinner tonight was a fine offering of fresh, wild caught salmon, green peas, and a fresh mixed green salad with avocado. Fred had a Lean Cuisine, spaghetti and meat balls. Although we are experimenting with diets, for now, fish is out. I feel bad serving a microwave meal but he eats such small amounts it seems to make sense, for now.

After dinner I met my friends Harriet and Paul at a local restaurant. They were out our way shopping. The downtown merchants here in Rochester decorate their buildings from roof line to sidewalk with solid color light strands. Each building uses a different color and they alternate with reds, green, yellow and blue. Maybe over the next few days I can get down there and take some pictures as it is unique as well as beautiful. So, they ate and I had coffee, it was nice getting out for an hour or so.

We just finished the before bedtime routine, Fred did real well, he's probably counting sheep right now. Speaking of sheep, yesterday morning about a mile down the road a deer bounded? ran? strolled? (what is it deers do?) across the street maybe 10 yards in front of the car. All the years I lived in Detroit thinking the only wildlife here were roaches and rats, the deer was much nicer to watch, bounding, running, strolling, or whatever deer do.

For now good evening. It has been a busy and difficult day however we made it through, tomorrow will be a little easier I'm sure. Thanks everyone, Chuck

PS: When you call the phone company to report a phone line with no dial tone, why do they ask if you're calling from the phone with the problem?
